Professor Lisa T. Alexander published her essay “Evicted: The Socio-Legal Case for the Right to Housing,” in the 126 Yale Law Journal Forum 431 (2017). Her essay is a book review of Harvard Sociologist, Pulitzer Prize Winner and MacArthur Genius Matthew Desmond’s book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City (Crown Publishers, New York, 2016). Her book review was discussed on the Property Profs Blog (Apr. 2017).

Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor Cynthia Alkon participated in a panel titled “The New ‘Gold Standard’ in Teaching Negotiation, Mediation and Arbitration: Cutting Edge Tools, Strategies & Practices” at the ABA Dispute Resolution Spring Conference in San Francisco, Calif. (Apr. 22, 2017).

Associate Dean for Planning, Compliance and Evening Programs and Professor Stephen Alton’s most recent article, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll’s Will: A Tale of Testamentary Capacity,” was published in the Tulsa Law Review (Apr. 2017).

Professor Susan Ayres’ article, “Paternity Un(certainty): How the Law Surrounding Paternity Challenges Negatively Impacts Family Relationships and Women’s Sexuality,” was published in Journal of Gender, Race and Justice (Apr. 2017).

Professor Sahar Aziz delivered the keynote address at the Inclusion and Diversity for Higher Education Conference hosted by Texas A&M University – Galveston (Apr. 3, 2017).

  • Presented her paper, “Rethinking Counterterrorism in the Age of ISIS: Lessons from Sinai,” at the Midwest Political Science Association Annual Conference in Chicago, Ill. (Apr. 6-8, 2017).

  • Participated on the panel “Muslim Couples’ Divorce and Mediation” at the American Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Conference in San Francisco, Calif. (Apr. 21, 2017).

  • Delivered the presentation “Islam on Trial: Muslims and Civil Rights” at Princeton University (Apr. 27, 2017).

  • ​Gave the following television interviews:

Associate Professor Mark Edwin Burge’s article “Applying the Cayman Approach to Virtual Currency: A Disruptive Opportunity Waiting to Happen” was published in the Cayman Financial Review (Second Quarter 2017, Issue 47) (Apr. 2017).

Associate Dean William Byrnes's “Background and Current Status of FATCA” (written with Robert J. Munro) was the #1 tax paper downloaded on SSRN for April 2017.

Professor Irene Calboli completed a mission as expert for the World Intellectual Property Organization to the Intellectual Property Office of Malaysia, and assisted in designing two new courses for the Intellectual Property Academy of Malaysia (Apr. 2017).

  • Lead a discussion on her book Intellectual Property Exhaustion and Parallel Trade as part of the BookIT Intellectual Property Book Talk Series held at ITT Chicago-Kent College of Law in Chicago, Ill. (Apr. 3, 2017).

  • Served as a guest speaker on "Copyright Protection in the RCEP and TTP" at an Advanced Copyright Law Seminar at Columbia Law School, New York, NY (Apr. 4, 2017).

  • Presented her paper "Exhaustion and Trade in ASEAN" and co-organized a roundtable at the Sixth International Intellectual Property Scholars Roundtable held at New York University School of Law in New York, NY (Apr. 7-8, 2017).

  • Presented remarks on "Design Protection" at the 25th Annual Intellectual Property Law & Policy Conference held at Fordham University School of Law in New York, NY (Apr. 19-21, 2017).

Professor Megan Carpenter joined Simon Tam of The Slants in a Q&A on legal issues for musicians held at Lola's in Fort Worth, Texas. The panel was followed by a concert with the band (Apr. 10, 2017).

Professor Gabriel Eckstein's article “Aquifers Shared between Mexico and the U.S.: management perspectives and their transboundary nature” has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal, Ground Water. Eckstein co-authored this article with Dr. Rosario Sanchez of the Texas Water Resources Institute, and it will be published later in 2017.

  • Served as judge for the Water Daze Poster Session, organized by Texas A&M Water Management & Hydrological Sciences Program in College Station, Texas (Apr. 5, 2017).

Associate Dean for Research and Professor Susan Fortney published the following article in 85 Fordham Law Review 2033 (2017): “Tort in Search of a Remedy, Prying Open the Courthouse Doors for Legal Malpractice Victims.” This article was solicited for the Fordham Law Review Conference on Civil Litigation Ethics at a Time of Vanishing Trials.

  • Moderated the Ethics Roundtable for ethics scholars and teachers at Texas A&M University.

Professor Michael Z. Green presented a discussion of David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants (2013), by Malcolm Gladwell, and The Wisest One in the Room: How You Can Benefit from Social Psychology’s Most Powerful Insights (2016), by Thomas Gilovich and Lee Ross, as part of the panel on “What I am Reading” at the American Bar Association 19th Annual Section of Dispute Resolution Spring Conference (Apr. 21, 2017).

  • Presented “Bipolar Disorder and Other Psychiatric Disabilities Versus Workplace Hostilities” at the Mid-Cities Human Resources Association monthly meeting in Euless, Texas (Apr. 5, 2017).

  • Presented “Negotiation of Collective Bargaining Agreements” at the 55th Annual Course on Labor Law and Labor Arbitration held at The Center for American and International Law in Plano, Texas (Apr. 11, 2017).

Executive Professor Bill Henning served for the past three years as a member of a Uniform law Commission (ULC) drafting committee charged with revising the Model Tribal Secured Transactions Act (MTSTA). He also served as ULC Liaison to the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank’s Center for Indian Country Development, which prepared a revised Implementation Guide and Commentary (Guide) to accompany the act. He was one of the principal authors of the Guide. The project concluded in April with the publication of the revised MTSTA and Guide (Apr. 2017).

Associate Dean for Experiential Education and Professor Luz Herrera spoke about “Innovative Practices in Civil Legal Service Delivery” in the inaugural Civil Justice Research Institute Symposium at the University of California, Irvine School of Law (Apr 28, 2017).

Professor Glynn Lunney presented portions of his forthcoming book as a TED talk, Copyright’s Excess: Mo’ Copyright = Mo’ Money = Less Music, at TEDxTAMU (Apr. 22, 2017).

Associate Dean for Academic Support & Bar Passage and Professor James McGrath presented “Embracing Evidence Based Learning and Teaching” at the Penn State University’s Dickinson Law School in Carlisle, Penn. (Apr. 10, 2017).

Professor Thomas W. Mitchell testified (testimony begins at 3:08:25) in support of S.B. 499, the Uniform Partition of Heirs’ Property Act which he drafted, before the Texas House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee in Austin, Texas (Apr. 4, 2017).

  • Quoted in a story broadcast nationwide on NPR’s Here and Now show for the story titled “In Georgia, Inherited Property Creates Risks for Vulnerable Communities," (Apr. 12, 2017).

  • Presented “African-Americans’ Quest for Full Citizenship Through Property Ownership Repeatedly Undermined” at the invitation-only Progressive Property 2017 Workshop Conference at Loyola University-New Orleans University College of Law (Apr. 22, 2017).

  • Worked with the Louisiana State Law Institute (LSLI) to develop plans to have the LSLI form a study group to consider whether it would be advisable for Louisiana to enact the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act into law. (Apr. 23, 2017).

Professor Timothy Mulvaney presented “Move Along to Where? Property in Service of Democracy,” at the Progressive Property Workshop, held at Loyola University-New Orleans College of Law (Apr. 2017).

Associate Instructional Professor John F. Murphy was named "Legal Analysis, Research and Writing (LARW) Professor of the Year" for the fifth time in seven years at the Barristers' Ball (Apr. 15, 2017).

Professor Srividhya Ragavan presented “Patents, Specialized Licenses & Issues” at Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) in Higher Education, a Government of India program held at National Law University, Jodhpur (Apr. 13-17, 2017).

  • Participated in the Aurounya University Inaugural Presentation, held at ITC Grand, Chennai (Apr. 22, 2017).

  • Presented “National IP Policy of India” at the World IP Forum held in Bangalore (Apr. 28, 2017).

  • Interviewed for “Whirlpool Awarded $7.6 Million in Case Against TST Water Over Water Filter Design,” in SE Texas Record (Apr. 24, 2017).

  • Wrote “The Line Has Changed” for The Hindu Business Line (Apr. 26, 2017).

Associate Professor Neil L. Sobol testified about Texas House Bill 1767: Collection of Consumer Debt by Debt Buyers before the Texas House Committee on Investments & Financial Services in Austin, Texas (Apr. 18, 2017).

Professor Frank Snyder (with Ann M. Mirabito) published “Consumer Preferences in Performance Defaults” in the Michigan Business and Entrepreneurial Law Journal. The article is an empirical study of consumer attitudes regarding what they expect to get when they enter into contracts (Apr. 2017).

  • Served a guest speaker on small business issues for medical marijuana businesses at the WomenGrow Dallas Chapter’s monthly meeting (Apr. 6, 2017).

  • Spoke on “Regulatory and Tax Issues” at the 2nd Annual Southwest Cannabis Convention and Expo in Fort Worth (Apr. 22, 2017).

  • Interviewed and quoted in the Houston Chronicle in a story about medical marijuana licenses in Texas (Apr. 28, 2017).

Instructional Associate Professor of Law Joan Stringfellow was elected as President of the Southwest Association of Law Libraries for 2017-2018 at the group’s annual meeting (Apr. 8, 2017).

Professor Elizabeth Trujillo presented “US-Cuban Relations:  Changing Attitudes in International Trade and the Path Forward” for the International Section of the Dallas Bar Association. The presentation discussed trends in U.S. international trade that may shed some light on future U.S.-Cuban trade and investment relations in this context (Apr. 19, 2017). As co-convener of the global and comparative law program, she also:

  • Hosted the Dean of University of Havana, Marta Moreno, and her colleague, Theresa Delgado, at Texas A&M University School of Law in Fort Worth, Texas (Apr. 2017).
  • Moderated a roundtable entitled “Getting to Know Cuba,” hosted by the Texas A&M International Law Society (Apr. 20, 2017).

Associate Professor Saurabh Vishnubhakat delivered the luncheon keynote presentation at the April meeting of the Dallas Bar Association Intellectual Property Section (Apr. 28, 2017).

  • Co-organized and moderated the first of the 3D Printing Webinar Series. The event was in partnership with the law firm of Hunton & Williams, and speakers included Hunton partner and IP Practice Group head Maya Eckstein, Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business professor Deven Desai and USPTO supervisory patent examiner Veronica Ewald (Apr. 6, 2017).

  • Presented his paper, “The Non-Doctrine of Redundancy,” at PatCon 7: The Patent Conference, held at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in Chicago, Ill. (Apr. 7–8, 2017).

Professor Peter Yu outlined his new proposal to reform the investor-state dispute settlement mechanism to retain flexibilities provided by the WTO TRIPS Agreement at the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal symposium titled Moving Toward a 'Global Super Court'?: Examining and Reshaping Investor-State Arbitration at Loyola University Chicago School of Law (Apr. 7, 2017).
