Why Host an Extern?

Access Motivated, Top Talent

Through our Externship Programs, discover and engage with some of the brightest minds in the nation. Hosting an extern provides you with a dedicated, enthusiastic individual ready to assist with substantive legal work and the opportunity to identify future legal talent.

Shared Benefits and Flexible Commitment

Externs provide valuable support to your team’s work and mission and bring fresh perspectives on the latest legal trends and theories. With our part- and full-time options, you can choose the commitment level that best suits a learning experience that will be mutually beneficial. Compensation is permitted, but not required, making this an accessible opportunity to provide a unique, mutually beneficial experience for everyone.

Shape the Next Generation

Serving as a field supervisor is a rewarding opportunity to mentor an aspiring lawyer. You play a direct role in teaching the practical and professional skills necessary for a student to become "practice-ready," contributing to the legal profession while enhancing your organization's reputation as a leader in legal education.

Our Programs

We offer a variety of programs based on practice settings or subject. Each program requires students to complete fieldwork and attend a seminar taught by faculty or adjunct faculty experienced in the relevant practice setting.

Students apply to a program and within each program, they can pursue either part-time or full-time residency externships, depending on what the host organization offers. A host organization can request the type of time commitment that best works for the experience to make it mutually beneficial.

In part-time externships, students elect between 2-6 course credits, working 42.5 hours/credit (about 8-20 hours per week) over 10-12 weeks.

In full-time residency externships, students can earn between 9-12 credits, working 42.5 hours/credit (about 30 -40 hours per week) over 12-15 weeks.

Hosting a Student

We partner with field supervisors and host organizations committed to mentoring students to provide an educational experience and expose students to the range of legal activities involved in the supervising attorney's practice. To learn more about the program, please review the Texas A&M Externship Programs Overview.

If you would like to apply to host a student, please complete the Questionnaire and return it to Cecily Becker.

The following are the basic eligibility and supervisory requirements to host an extern.

Supervisor Eligibility & Responsibilities

Who Can Serve as Supervisor?

The primary supervisor must have at least 3 years’ experience, have a J.D.(or equivalent), and be licensed, in good standing, with the appropriate jurisdictional authority. If the placement is in a non-traditional, law-related field, the supervisor can be someone with the relevant education and demonstrated experience in that field; thus, a J.D. is preferred but not required.

Supervisor’s Responsibilities:

  1. Discuss confidentiality issues and workplace policies at the beginning of the semester;
  2. Discuss and develop a learning plan (goals) with the student;
  3. Assign substantive and meaningful legal and law-related work, including opportunities to observe and participate in any meetings, briefings, hearings, or other events, especially those connected to issues on which the student worked.
  4. Meet regularly with the student to provide feedback and guidance on performance. Feedback is critical to a student’s learning. A mentoring relationship is expected where the supervisor will discuss the many aspects of practice, including issues of professional responsibility, throughout the semester
  5. Sign the student’s timesheets and complete mid-term and final reviews (provided by the school) on the student’s work and discuss the evaluations with the student.
  6. Be available to speak with the school during the semester as needed and timely notify the Extern Director if the student is not performing competently at any time.
  7. If others also assign work to the student, the supervisor will ensure they are aware of these supervisory expectations, especially in providing timely feedback and guidance to the student.
  8. Field Supervisors are subject to the Texas A&M University Nondiscrimination and Abuse Policy.
“Professor Cecily Becker presented me with the perfect externship at a time that I wasn’t particularly looking. The externship aligned with my professional goals and allowed me to explore my interests through an untraditional lens, which helped me to further tailor my interests.”
- Arielle Williams JD ’21, Associate - Morgan, Lewis and Bockius LLP
