Our one-year General Studies Master of Laws degree — offered in-residence on our campus in Fort Worth, Texas — provides concentrated postgraduate legal study for two primary groups:

Lawyers who are graduates of non-U.S. law schools seeking training in U.S. legal doctrine and skills and who seek eligibility to sit for the bar exam in Texas or other jurisdictions;
U.S. educated lawyers wishing to pursue advanced study.

General Studies LLM Coursework

The career-relevant LLM is built for lawyers and combines up-to-date legal knowledge with real-world skills to prepare you for new opportunities. You’ll take foundational courses that will familiarize you with the structure of the U.S. legal system, fundamentals of legal reasoning and analysis, and core concepts in the major areas of U.S. doctrinal law. All students must take an upper-level writing or drafting course. The LLM colloquium is an optional, regularly scheduled course with overviews and discussions of selected issues.

Students typically complete 10-12 credits per semester, which allows them to reach eligibility to graduate within one year.

Q: What is a General Studies LLM?

A: The General Studies Master of Laws (LLM) is a postgraduate master’s degree for individuals who have already obtained a Juris Doctor (JD) or its equivalent from a non-U.S. school.

Q: What can I do with a General LLM degree?

A: Most of our LLM General Studies students complete the program in order to take the bar exam and obtain licensure to practice as an attorney in the United States. U.S. attorneys with a JD typically get an LLM to focus on a particular area of law.

Q: What are the admissions requirements to enter a General LLM Program?

A: Applicants for admission to a General LLM program must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a law school with accreditation through the American Bar Association or its equivalent, a first law degree from an international university or law school. Internationally educated lawyers must also demonstrate English language proficiency in most cases.

Q: How long does a General LLM degree take to complete?

A: Colleges and universities offer General LLM programs both online and in-person. They can also be pursued through either full-time or part-time study. Therefore, some students will earn a General LLM faster than others.

The General LLM program at the Texas A&M University School of Law requires 24 credit hours to earn a diploma. Students typically graduate in one to two years.

In addition to completing at least three upper-level courses in a chosen area of focus, all Texas A&M General LLM students must take an upper-level writing or drafting course. Graduates of non-U.S. law schools must take a concentrated Introduction to the U.S. Legal System, a survey course that covers the fundamentals of American legal institutions and processes. Texas A&M Law also offers a General LLM colloquium, which provides overviews and discussions on a range of subjects.

Q: Is the General LLM available on-campus or online?

A: At Texas A&M, the Master of Laws General Studies is in-residence on our campus in Fort Worth, Texas. In some cases students in the General Studies LLM may also complete an online certificate of international tax, risk management, or wealth management in the course of their studies.
