MLS Admissions Requirements at Texas A&M Law

Domestic applicants for the MLS degree must, at a minimum, have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution according to the U.S. Department of Education, while international applicants must possess a degree equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate.

Master of Legal Studies Admissions decisions are based on a holistic review of each applicant’s file. A multitude of factors are considered when determining whether an applicant will successfully complete the MLS degree requirements. Meeting the minimum criteria for admission does not guarantee admission.

Our Master of Legal Studies Application Process

Step 1: Submit your MLS application

We no longer accept email or physical applications for MLS or Graduate Certificates. Please apply using the Texas A&M University graduate application assembly service (CAS).

Step 2: Apply for Fee Waiver/Submit Application Fee

Texas A&M Law charges a $65 non-refundable application fee ($90 for international applicants). Submit a check or money order payable to Texas A&M University.

Timely applications are eligible to be considered for an application fee waiver.

Step 3: Submit Supporting Documentation Descriptive Résumé
Include details about your education, work history, awards, honors, and certificates, extracurricular activities, military service, community service/volunteerism, foreign language proficiencies, and any other significant achievements or involvement.

Statement of Interest
This typed and double-spaced statement should be no longer than two pages and address your area of interest (see track options here), your educational and professional experiences, and goals following graduation.

Official Transcripts
Applicants should arrange to have all official transcripts from any post-secondary institutions submitted to Texas A&M School of Law. Required transcripts include your bachelor degree granting institution and any post-baccalaureate work. Where applicable, the transcript must reflect the conferral of an earned degree.

Letters of Recommendation (Optional)
For applicants desiring to submit letters of recommendation, please have your recommenders submit them directly to the School of Law at distanceed@law.tamu.edu

Additional Documents as Requested
There are a variety of additional documents you may be asked to provide. This includes a Character and Fitness Addendum, which is required if you answer "yes" to any of the questions in this section of the application.

Step 4: Additional Documentation For international Applicants Transcript Evaluation
Applicants who completed their degrees outside of the U.S., its territories, or Canada must submit all transcripts with an official English translation and evaluation prepared by a recognized translation service, including all original seals and/or signatures. Transcripts must show degree completion equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree.

Demonstrated English Language Proficiency
International applicants whose first language is not English and/or who received degrees from an institution outside the U.S. must demonstrate English language proficiency through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 100 or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7.0. Please arrange to have test scores sent directly from the testing agency to the School of Law. Scores reported within the last two years are acceptable.

Important MLS Application Deadlines

Applications and all associated paperwork must be completed and submitted by the deadlines listed below for each cohort and are reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage all applicants to apply early in order to receive a timely admissions decision. Master of Legal Studies Applications will not be considered until all of the above paperwork is received.
