Get to Know Wendy Law

What drew you to the law?

My uncle is an attorney. Growing up, I often thought about becoming an attorney like him. However, this dream changed once I entered college and was drawn onto a different path. My lifelong love of books led me to pursuing my master’s degree and becoming an academic law librarian. Helping the law students and faculty with their legal research requests reignited my fascination with the law and led me full circle to obtaining my law degree.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

As an academic law librarian, my teaching experiences have usually involved one-on-one instruction with law students at the Reference Desk. Helping educate students about the various legal resources and research methods available to them has been very rewarding throughout the years. I have helped students grow as legal researchers. Once they become attorneys, they use this knowledge to benefit their clients during their legal careers.

What do you hope students gain from your courses?

Law is promulgated through a variety of sources, including statutes, regulations and case law. Accessing these sources in print and electronic formats can be daunting for a law student. As academic law librarians, we help law students use these sources and provide them access to legal information.

What did you do prior to entering academia?

I have always loved books and learning. Once I entered college, I became a perpetual student, taking classes in a variety of subjects. After I earned my master’s degree, my love of books and learning carried over into my career in academia.

What are you passionate about outside of the law?

I am passionate about my family, my animals, movies, Michigan football and geeky stuff. I love Star Trek, comic books and reading sci-fi/fantasy novels. I have been known to play the occasional computer game as well as play games such as those featured on The Big Bang Theory.

What are your research interests?

My current research interests focus on legal research, legal history and issues relating to law librarianship.
